Wines from Portugal – Portuguese Red & White Wine
Portugal holds 7th place for the most wine produced in the world. They have over 500 years of experience under their belt and Portuguese wine remains one of the largest exports in the country. Many of the wines from Portugal are native to the country itself and as a result the country produces a wide array of varietals. That means you probably won’t see the typical Pinot’s or Cabernet’s but don’t be discouraged – Portuguese wine doesn’t disappoint.
If you’re planning to buy Portuguese wine, the most popular by far is the Port. This wine from Portugal is a sweet, dessert wine and usually red. The Portuguese red wine comes in many varieties but the favorite is usually a Tawny Port. If you’re looking for something white then we would highly recommend the Portuguese white wine from the Vinho Verde region. The name translates to “young wine” since there is no aging process required to produce it. This leaves the white wine from Portugal tasting characteristically light, fresh and fruity with a bit of fizz but doesn’t qualify as a sparkling wine. When buying a Portuguese white wine from this region, most people prefer the Vinho Alvarinho.
Other notable Portuguese wines to look for are those from the Douro wine region. They produce a lot of the best Port wines but are also responsible for many of the Portuguese red and white table wines. So if you’re buying Portuguese wine and see Douro on the bottle, it’s typically a good choice.
